As Land Rover !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! puts an end to its historic Defender model, bad guys around the World will have to look elsewhere for a decent, rugged, tough, go-anywhere, kill-anything, on-and-off-roader. They'll have to do so sooner than later, as photos of the latest shoot from the next James Bond film SPECTRE show the spy killing the car off in an even more dramatic way than Land Rover managed - by crashing a plane into some.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The Daniel Craig Bond films are all essentially synonymous with "We don't have to worry about you trying these stunts at home, because they're so ridiculous you wouldn't even be able to attempt them." There was Bond climbing a crane, and then jumping from it to another crane, and then to a rooftop, and then to the ground in a sequence to open Casino Royale . Then in Quantum of Solace , there was the impossible car chase between Bond's Aston Martin DBS and a pair of Alfa Romeo's (impossible because the Alfa's were able to keep up) to open the film. In Skyfall , Bond chased a baddie on motorcycles onto the rooftop of a 500 year old market before crashing his bike ONTO A MOVING TRAIN. You have Bond-veteran Stunt Coordinator Gary Powell to thank for most of Bond's adrenaline-injecting ridiculousness. (You also have him to thank, in part, for the new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .) So what could the Bond team possibly have planned for SPECTRE that is anymore ludicrous?
Well, for starters, it involves the Austrian alps, a small plane, two or more dead-on-arrival Land Rover Defenders, a brand-new Discovery Sport, a beautiful Bond babe lady and an oversized evil henchman, and quite a few pyrotechnics. A photo taken from filming that started this week shows the awesome baddie Defenders lined up:
( Pictured: somuchwant.jpg )
It is unclear how many Defender's will actually be involved in the chase on film, as big stunt scenes such as this often require multiple identical models for continuity purposes. Reports say two-to-three trucks will play back up to the baddie Land Rover Discovery Sport that will also be featured. The henchman Hinx (played by Dave Bautista) and one of the main Bond girls Miss Madeiline Swann (played by Lιa Seydoux) will feature in the Disco Sport.
(Left photo: Daniel Craig, Lιa Seydoux, and Dave Bautista in Austria; Right photo: Supposed Land Rover Disovery Sport for filming, taken on location in Austria)
Rumors and reports from the set in Austria claim that the sequence will involve Bond flying the plane chasing Hinx and Swann on the ground. He attempts to land the plane on a narrow road, breaking off the wings and causing the Defenders to crash, before ramming the remaining torpedo of a plane into the Discovery, rescuing Miss Swann. I don't see how ramming a propeller-led airplane into someone's car is a good way of saving them, but he's James Bond, and nothing comes easy. Photos from an earlier test shoot featuring a burning Defender and airplane seemingly confirm the reports:
On top of all that awesome news, if you were one of the many people who saw 2013's Her or last year's Interstellar and thought " Oh boy, that sure was a pretty movie! " the same cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema has already been spotted doing the camera work for SPECTRE . With other locations including Mexico City, London, Rome, and Morocco planned, as well as the promise of the original evil organization S.P.E.C.T.R.E. almost guaranteed to make a comeback, we should be in for a classic plane-car chase, and a great film.

They all have videos like that. The truth is that these things are relative. Is a fancy Discovery or whatever more capable off road than an executive saloon? Yes. Is it as capable as a utilitarian off road design with less wheel, more tyre and a whole lot less plastic crap waiting to get pulled off by rocks and branches? No, it's not. A vehicle can have "sleeper" capabilities, sure, but big shiny alloys and low profile road tyres are what they are, ground clearance is ground clearance and nothing that can corner like that on tarmac is ever going to match up off road to something that can't.

Ground clearance is 8.3 inches.
For the Ford F-150 (regular cab, 6.5' bay, 4x4):

Ground clearance is 9.4 inches.
It really is a competent outdoors vehicle. It just looks like it would struggle outside of the soccer field parking lot.

Where have you been lately? The Defender has become a "luxury" car as of late. Even the Wheeler Dealers took an Aggie-Defender and made her into a Semi-Ghetto Chelsea Tractor!!

Yeah, but again that's aftermarket. On their website Land Rover still retails the Defender as a utility vehicle, as opposed to for example Mercedes who offer the Gelandewagen as a luxury truck from the factory. By contrast, the most high-tech bit of kit Land Rover offers in the options list for the Defender is a radio.

If you watch the episode, Mike pulls out a 2010 Land Rover Defender Marketing Booklet, and it shows quite clearly that the Defender was being up-marketed at the time to luxury buyers. The website even does this, not highlighting the "utility" use of the defender.

I watched the whole episode, the only thing he says from the brochure is that new models 'look a little nicer' and that they sell for £25k. Hardly luxury.
And are we looking at the same website? This is the spec page for the Defender, and it lists things like the wading depth, approach and departure angles, ground clearance and load capacity for the pickup version.
Defender is the epitome of toughness, of ruggedness, of strength and most importantly of capability.

You've gone a long way to proving my point here. The F-150 is, like the Discovery Sport, hardly a primarily off road oriented vehicle. The Ford is a work truck and the Discovery Sport is basically a road going family hauler. Yes, it can be used for something else. Yes, it probably is more capable off road than a Passat or whatever, but a true off roader it is not. A quick Google tells me that, yeah, it's got a respectable fording depth, but the approach and departure angles are nothing to get exited about (Defender is 51/35, Wrangler Unlimited 44.4/40.5), a Defender 90 has a breakover angle of 34 degrees to the Discovery Sports 21! Now you can see those angles and that's what makes the Discovery Sport (and it's many clones) look like they wouldn't keep up off road. i.e The thing that makes them look less capable is the same thing that makes them actually less capable. Same goes for those wheels and tyres, they don't just look less tough and durable than proper off road wheels, they *are* less tough and durable. They are also expensive. If you off road with them like you would little steelies with big balloony tyres you will break them and it will cost alot of money. I'm not trying to claim it's a Camry, but it's not a Defender/LandCruiser/Wrangler (whatever your offroad weapon of choice) either. Maybe it's a particularly good soccer mom SUV, but it's still a soccer mom SUV.

I am in no way suggesting that I would opt for a Discovery Sport ahead of a proper off roader if I was going to off-road. All I'm saying is that it's a lot more competent at driving on dirt than it looks - although for serious rock crawling it really will suck.

It's "better" in that it might be better designed and put together, but ICON takes away the essence of the original vehicles. I used to be a fan, but they look too "bro" to me. I'm willing to pay a high price for original restoration, ICON is pretty garbage.

It's all play of words.
You was downplaying the off road capabilities of a car as if it's nothing if it's not 'proper' (how would you define a 'proper'? what's the numbers? is off-road means full-on hardcore rock crawling?). Even after writing long paragraph describing how DS has capabilities but lower, you still using deregatory term 'soccer mom SUV' in the conclusion.
Meanwhile David prefers to respectfully highlighting the not-too-bad off-road capabilities of the DS.
You both have the same conclusion but very different tone to it. That way, people may have different idea seeing both of your posts.

Soccer mom SUV is not a derogatory term, it is a descriptive one, it describes what this vehicle is and what it is designed for, evidenced by, as I said, those big fragile alloys and low profile tyres. I am not obliged to speak about a car in "respectful" terms, it's a machine, I'm not going to hurt its feelings. As I said to David, it may well be a very good soccer mom SUV/light duty family hauler/whatever you want to call it but it is simply not an offroader when compared to the Wranglers/Defenders/Jimnys of this world, and as such is much better on road, which what it has been designed for and how it will used. Just because there's that awesome video of that guy off roading his Crown Vic does not make the Crown Vic an offroader, same goes for this, the Audi Q range, BMW Xthings and literally anything else that comes as standard with big alloys and low profile rubber, and all the James May vs self driving military truck videos the world are not going change that.

Be that as it may, I still see far more dirty, dented Defenders than I do tarted up 'luxury' versions. My university uses them to move gardening and maintenance supplies around, and I don't think I've ever seen a farm without at least one. And you can still find them on AutoTrader for cheap.
The pampered examples are very much the exception.

Nice advertising for SHB in that last but one photo. We used to hire 4x4s, mainly Defenders, off them for archaeological fieldwork. The British Army hires from them a lot - often see squaddies in SHB vehicles up on Salisbury Plain. The company is based just outside Southampton, so an easy hike to the ferry and across to the Continent for the JB filming.

domestic built vehicles - safe
poorly maintained domestic built vehicles*1 - safe
foreign built vehicles - unsafe (till 25 years old by which time a vehicle has met it's drinking age and can be brought in*2 by which time it's now - safe)
*1 dependending on state or district with some states or districts not even having requirements or periodical tests to make sure they are to some degree safe to drive or be driven on the public highway.
